1491 : New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus | Charles Mann
The title says it all.
Food, Inc. | edited by Karl Weber
this documentary reveals the inner workings of our mass-scale farms. Not pretty. But anyone interested in eating well should make this a must-read.
Fast Food Nation : the Dark Side of the All-American Meal | Eric Schlosser
a wonderfully well-written book ; part expose, part manifesto.
A critical look at the anomaly of the typical American diet. But by no means does the author blame "we the people". Instead he blames mega-companies for our animal-laden diet. Schlosser is an advocate for small-scale farms, worker safety, corporate accountability, and, crucially, thinking for yourself. Have it your way.
American Food Writing : an Anthology with Classic Recipes | Molly O'Neill
Historic writings in praise of American foods. Notably, the watermelon.
American Earth : Environmental Writing Since Thoreau | Bill McKibben
a sampling of both classic and contemporary writers' works. You'll be wanting to buy the whole books that these samples came from, but it's a good place to start!
Becoming Americans : Four Centuries of Immigrant Writing | Ilan Stavans
i just love the cover of this book!
